20 gallon puffer tank
Hey I am picking up a tank this week, I was wondering what I would need?
I am looking to get dwarf puffers, and otto's. What would be the best substrate? I like sand much better. Also, do fake plants work with puffers? Along with other decoration.
How many DP and oto's can I put in the tank?
From what I have read 80degrees is about right?
also 50% water change each week?
The tank is an eclipse 3 tank with lid, light, and filter, I know I will need to get a heater and a vacuum. Anything else? Is a water pump necessary?
The tank, filter, and lid is 35$ from some guy, is that a good deal? for 12x12x30"
In conclusion, both DP's and otos are *really* sensitive to water quality, so make sure your tank is very thoroughly cycled. I'd also add the otos first, as the DP's are much more territorial, and the otos will appreciate a chance to get settled in.
Though I wouldn't call dwarf puffers hardy fish, I would describe them as being much hardier than the Oto's. When I had Oto's, the dwarf puffers never seemed to even notice they existed so I'm not sure if that's a big worry. Personally, I would wait until the tank has had some time to mature before adding the Oto's. This means both stable water parameters but also decent algae growth. Oto's are one of the better algae eaters I've seen, but it took mine a while before they would even eat green vegetables and I was never able to get them to eat any sort of prepared food, even algae wafers. For a while after they were added, all they would touch was algae, so in a newly-cycled tank I'd be worried that they might starve.
