What gives?
I've just gotten this penguin (I'm gonna say 100, but whatever is good for a ten gallon) biowheel filter like.. Boxing day, so it's really only like 5 months old (that was a really big guesstimate). BUT I've noticed lately when I clean the tank it takes forever to get the thing flowing again. Like I'll top it off with water to make it easier on it, and it goes all the way to the top, makes a fair bit of noise, goes up, down, up, down, then finally pushes the water out (full force) and the freakin biowheel doesn't even turn... What gives? Is it my filter or the biowheel? I manually got it going, but it moves at like 1/10th the speed of my penguin filter on my other tank. Advice?! Thanks!

when you put the water in the filter to get it going again try adjusting the flow rate. i did that with mine the other day and it started working much much faster! i just had to top it off once and it was fine.

as for the wheel not spinning...this happened to me also. i tried so many different things to fix it. (of course they all failed!) so i just bought a new wheel and it worked just fine. i dont know if you have the same problem i did but you might want to try a new wheel. hold old is the one you have right now?

Lol this may sound like a silly question, because it is. But how do I adjust the flow rate? I thought it was the clicky thing on the intake tube that either makes more holes along the intake tube or less, because thats the only thing I know how to adjust on my filter.

I've only had the filter and biowheel since boxing day so.... Let me have a look at the calender... This is my 6th going on 7th month having it. I honestly can't remember when I started having problems with the filter starting up again, but its been fairly resent. And if I had problems with the biowheel all along then I only noticed it when I started having problems with getting my filter started. I think I have a year warranty on my filter so I can probably return it if you think its a problem with the filter itself.

No one? Seriously? To bad, I guess I'll just risk it and return it.

Did you try reading the instructions or calling the company's troubleshooting phone line? I know it's a novel concept, but they can usually answer model specific questions.

Little-Fizz 07-23-2008 11:09 AM

Funny you mentioned to read the instructions, because this morning I was looking for the receipt, and I was looking in the box for the filter. And the instructions were in there... Lol it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but I'll call the company and see what they have to say. Thanks.

I don't think there is a flow rate adjustment on filters that small. The Big Emperors have them and so do the large Penguins, but I don't believe the little100 has one.

Try cleaning the impeller when you do tank maintenance. It may be gummed up.

Little-Fizz 07-23-2008 03:53 PM

Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks.

Thats not even my biggest concern though, my biggest concern is that the flow of the filter is perfectly fine, but the bio wheel spins a few times (Very slowly) then stops, then spins a few times, and stops. Where as the bio wheel on my other filter goes all the time and quickly at that.

Have you tried *lightly* rinsing out the biowheel with dechlorinated water? Also, check to make sure the two slots that hold the wheel aren't gunked up.

Little-Fizz 07-23-2008 09:35 PM

Lol yeah, the bio wheel doesn't even have that much build up on it. Theres more build up on the plastic sides then on the material of the bio wheel. :?

And the slots where the first thing I checked. But I'm going to call the company tomorrow after I take my filter apart and make sure theres no build up causing the problem.

Thanks for your replies!
