I'm just starting
I have a twelve gallon aquarium that I want to start. Our family has had fish in this tank before but the all died rather quickly. After reading a few articles on this site I realize I don't know what I am doing. I would like to have some tiger barbs or Harlequin Rasboras in the tank. I don't know if any other fish would go with them. Help me have healthy fish. Thanks

Tiger barbs tend to be nippy and may harass their other tankmates to death if space becomes an issue. 12g is too small for a group. Try looking for Barbus pentazona or cherry barbs. Both will work well. Keep 6 minimum for a start. You can add 6 harlequin rasboras along with 4-6 otos or panda corydoras. Add them slowly only after your tank is done cycling.

How do you cycle a tank?

I have never cycled a tank before. Do you think the method that evolves the Shrimp or Prawn would be a good easy way to go for me? If so, Do you just put a shrimp in and test the water until it cycles? thanks

Could I put a bottom feeder fish or two in my tank if i had some cherry barbs or Harlequin Rasboras?

Welcome to the forum Max.
Some pygmy corydoras or a few otocinclus would be a nice addition to a rasbora tank. I would not subject either of them to tiger barbs. Be aware that even after a tank is cycled, the otocinclus can be a bit picky about their water so wait until the tank has matured a while with fish in it before you add any of them.

Could I have some Cherry Barbs, Halrquin Rasboras, and a couple corysdoras. I think that may be a little over stocked
