Wow my tank looks different!!
Hey everybody, lol I was just looking at my tank blurb... And wow my tank looks different  I actually wanted some advice, lol ok so in the back right hand side of the tank, theres this HUGE plant, at first it started dying, but then out of no where it started growing really tall, and I'm finding little baby ones in places I didn't even plant it :? So... Do I just trim it? Or let it grow nice n tall.... The already tall ones appear to actually be branching off little baby ones. Pretty hard to believe considering I thought there were going to die. I believe it is called Bacopa Caroliniana... WOAH ok I just googled that name to see if it looked like my plants, then went to have a second look at my plants... And a huge part of it has actually snapped off??? I'm going to get a few pics but this is my before tank

And this is my tank now

*sigh* Those pictures are backwards, the one with more plants is my tank currently and the one with less is old.

nice tank

These are the picture of the plant I just discovered broken... I have no idea what happened? Should I throw the broken piece out? Or can I re plant it? There appears to be little roots on the plant? Or will where it broke off grow a new plant? I also have no flowers :? and I think these kinds of plants are supposed too.

This is a weird algae growth I've got everywhere too, its black and hairy? and EVERYWHERE. any advice on what it is and how to get rid of it?

yea i have that kind of algae to but i have no idea what it is hope someone will say what it is

Hah, thank you!

Yeah, I've had the algae for a while now, and it really just grows on my plants... and even the fake silk ones attached to the car thing in there. But I never really noticed it because I had green algae all over my glass, I finally got one of them magnet glass cleaners. My mom nearly died when she saw the tank the next day, it was crystal clear :D

I had that brush algae as well. From my understanding it generally starts on slow growing plants like anubias, but can spread not only to other plants but to gravel, driftwood, and even filters and such.

Here is what I had to do to get rid of it.

First, I upped my co2 injection and reduced how much light exposure my plants were receiving. Well, when I first started my tank I had zero co2 injection, so to be honest I STARTED co2 injection. Reduced my lighting from 11 hours to 9 hours a day. That seemed to stop it from spreading but did not eliminate it on the plants that had it.

I took the infected plants out and put them in a bleach/water solution. This really hurts the plants, but it kills the algae. It's rough on anubias because they take sooo long to grow back, but it seemed to work.

Hopefully there's a better solution out there, but I didn't find one. And I can say from experience that this does work. However, as long as it doesn't bother you, it's not harmful to your plants or your fish.

Lol, thanks! Yeah I should probably start a co2 injection... As I've been meaning to do that for a long time now. But I literally have zero cash, so buying a co2 system is out of the question, I've looked up a DIY co2 system a million times before, and I think I finally get it, so I'm going to brush up on my knowledge of the co2 system and start building my own.

:? ehh I don't really like the idea of digging all my plants up and using bleach on them. Can I not just clean the algae off with water? Why bleach? Will it grow back if I don't use bleach? Sorry about all the questions.

Also, do you have any idea what I should do about this rather large chunk of my plant that has broken off? It's not like dying or anything, I'm truly baffled as to why it broke off in the first place. Maybe it got to top heavy because of how large the plant got? Plus it was always moving around in the current of the filter so perhaps that finished it off. I don't want to leave it in there if its going to start rotting, so is re planting it out of the question? I mentioned before, I believe there are little roots that are on the stem of this plant, well thats what my mom keeps telling me, lol any ideas?

I'm not sure about whether or not it will grow back. If I had to wager a guess I would say yes, but it would be nothing but a guess.

I'm about to implement a DIY system myself. Once you understand the concept it's not too difficult and pretty cheap. For the system I'm going to implement it will end up costing me about $20 total, not including the cost of the yeast and sugar which is minimal anyways. I have a 45 gallon tank and I've been using those tablets that you drop in water that create co2 for about a minute and a half but I want something more consistent.
Here's a link I found on a good way to set up a DIY system.

As far as the algae, believe me I tried everything to get it off. You can try reaching in your tank and trying to scrape it off, and if it works I'll buy you a beer. I couldn't make a dent in it while it was in my tank.

I took a capful of bleach in a big bowl full of water and held the plants in it for about 2 minutes. Then I pulled them out and placed it in another bowl with just regular tap water. The algae came off like butter after that. Then i just put them back in the tank. The plants definitely look bleached, but they will grow back.

I think those roots you see coming off the plant are called runners. That's how a lot of plants grow. Instead of seeds these runners come out and grow new plants. If you don't want it to spread I would recommend trimming them.

Wow thanks, thats all really great info! Thats a really great link too, I think thats the one I had a look at a long time ago but gave up because I was having trouble following. I think I understand a little better now.

I think a while back I was at my fish store and a co2 system by... Jungle?and it was like... 30 bucks maybe? And then like 10 for a box of those tablets. But a DIY would be a good learning experience so I definitely want to go that route.

Ha! Alright, well the beer sounds tempting so I'll give it a try

Nahh I'm just kidding I'll take your word for it, and maybe if I feel like getting my hands (and arms) dirty and getting through those mazes of roots. I'll give my plants a little bleach bath.

Good to know, I can finally get my mom off my back about those "roots" hah. Thanks again!!
