I recently bought some driftwood from a cycled tank. The tank was pristine with a number of Mollies & their fry. The wood was perfecty "clean looking" and I soaked it in hot water but not for very long. It's very dark wood so of course when it starting getting some fuzz I noticed it. The tank (100 gal) is currently cycling w/2 zebra danio & 2 neon tetras. The fish are doing well not the wood.
The fuzz looks whitewith a very light hint of green. It's approximately 1/16" to 1/8" long. It does not look like any algae I have seen that grows on the sides of glass or acrylic of a tank. What is this stuff and how do I get rid of it?? :? Thanks! kym
sounds a bit like some form of aquatic mold usualy a thourough clean (though as you probably well know dont use soap as it may be harmfull to your fish)some molds are harmless however some can be dangerous to your fish but as i always say better safe then sorry id give it another scrub then a boil just to be sure thats if it is mold i cant be entirely sure without seeing it
any chance of a photo that would help alot in identifying this mystery fuzz
Could also be some hair algae. When I first started my 45g with some driftwood and several anubias plants I had a problem with it. It did spread to my driftwood as well. I was able to knock it out with a lot of co2 and reducing my wattage.
A picture would be helpful.
I'm going to try to get a hold of a camera. I just took some w/ mine and it's nothing but a blur. Thanks for the info and I'll be back with a photo soon.
I had a similar experience with a piece of Malaysian driftwood I had in a tank for a while. One day it just started getting really fuzzy. Mine turned blackish/green, however, so I took it out, made sure no fish were attached (catfish/plecos) and boiled it for a while to kill what was on it. Then I soaked it (overnight at least) to make sure nothing was leaching off of it. After that I put it back in the tank and it's been fine ever since.
