Corkscrew val no longer happy
I have a ten gallon tank with 2 anacharis, 2 java ferns and originally a corkscrew val. The tank has two Coralife Colormax 10watt flourescents, Marineland filter head and gravel substrate. All was well for almost the first year but now the corkscrew val just keeps shedding its leaves. A replacement did the same thing. The other plants are still doing fine so I'm trying a wisteria in place of the corkscrew. Any thing I should be looking for that would have made it bad for the vals? Other than fish food and waste, there is no fertilizer in the tank; algae growth on the plants and glass is moderate and needs to be cleaned off every other week or so.
Vals really hate any kind of algae growth on them in my experience. They also have a need for a good balance of nutrients.
The flourescents, are they power compact or regular bulbs? If they are regular ones then it might be time to change them out because the bulbs are getting rather old and this could be hurting the vals. If they are power compact then they should be fine until they burn out.
