Our New Addition

Ok, we've just got my wife's tank back up and running since before the move. Special Thanks to Linda C. for system sitting while we got ourselves settled in. All of the original livestock and corals were donated to Linda's "Aquariums in the Classroom" projects. So along with the system and Liverock, we were given a very interesting sump inhabitant. With a current shell length of just over 3", This guy is by far the largest Hermit Crab I've ever seen. So without further ado, I introduce our Hairy Red Hermit Crab

No, we have a 29g+20g sump that we broke down in January. Those fish and corals were donated. The 55 is still intact Although I will be moving a few of the corals to her tank soon.

Great photo! Cool critter too. My LFS has two of those huge hermits, probably almost 4, if not 5" big! One of mine is growing very fast as well, so we will see as to how he turns out. :)

Cody, I hope you don't have a Hairy Red Hermit in your display? They are aggressive and will eat your Stars, Hermits, and Snails. And Yes, the Hairy Reds are amongst the largest of the hermits growing up to 10", so the one we have here is still relatively small. Hopefully finding shells for him as he grows wont be too much of a challenge.

Not exactly sure how long a hairy red hermit crab lives. Ive been trying to google it but it seems there so little information on them that this thread actually shows up on page 2 of a google search on "hairy red hermit". I've Tried google searches for "hairy red hermit", "hairy red hermit crab" and even the scientific name, "Dardanus lagopodes", all of which yield very little results other than photos. Ive looked in the books I have here as well, but to no avail. I'll keep searching, but in the meantime, If anyone else comes up with information, I'd love to hear about what you may have found.
