Goldfish Question

Is there a way to tell the difference between male and female Comets?

willow 06-24-2008 02:23 PM

hi
females should be bigger and if looking at them from above
the female will be plump in the middle section where she
is holding eggs.
the males i think have white dots on the gills.
hth. :)

Willow your post is very subjective. Bigger - bigger than what? You may just have a particularly fat fish really. There are better ways to check - google it.

Well, there's a difference between "bigger" and "plumper". I wish it were easier, but with some fish, "plumper" is the only distinguishing feature. That's why willow suggested looking from above. You can get used to sexing fish that way if you practice.

I have two feeders left from long ago. The larger one is around 4" and the smaller one is about 2 1/2". The smaller one is always glued to the bigger ones side. Everywhere the big one goes, the smaller one is always swimming very close, even during feeding, the smaller one will not let the bigger one out of its sight.

In my experience with goldfish the white dots didn't appear on the male until they were ready to spawn. Just F.Y.I. :D Other than the spots, I couldn't tell my two apart and the spots disappeared after they mated. I actually did get about 30 babies from the pair, but not many lived to maturity for some reason.
