Are the upside down cat and the featherfin cat the same species?
They look the same to me :?
What are the differences between the two?

Basically, they are upside down swimmers more when they are young and less when old. I have one.

Featherfin catfish is a common name for Synodontis eupterus. Generally the common name upside down catfish is used to refer to Synodontis nigriventris.

However, upside down cat has been used as common names for a lot of different synodontis, and even all synodontis as a whole. Here's a list of fish commonly referred to as upside down catfish:

Another thing, S. eupterus gets about 8" long, S. nigroventis half that. S. nigroventis also prefers to be in a shoal. S. eupterus can be territorial.

If the top side of the fish is lighter than the bottom, chances are you have S. nigroventis (black bellied). If they're about the same, you have S. eupterus.

Syno Eupterus ("Featherfin Catfish") also are one of only 3 varieties of syno that have 3 sets of barbells. So that's an easy way to tell it apart from the Syno Nigriventris (most commonly called "upside-down catfish").

My Syno Eupterus does swim upside down fairly often though, I believe this is a habit of most if not all varieties of Synodontis.
