How long do I wait b4 cleaning filter new tank?
63l (16gallons I think) 60cm, 30cm, 35cm
fish: 3 Cherry Barbs (had for about 3 and half weeks)
6 cardinals (in tank for 6 days) all seem happy after a shaky start :)
tank 1 month 2 weeks aprox. old
using liquid API Test
amm. 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate 10-12, PH 7.4
water temp 24-25c
no live plants yet, plastics plants only.
water changes once a week 20-25%
light on 8-10 hours day tank out of direct sunlight but in well lit room
not sure of filter make, got fluval tank which came with filter, heater, light in hood.
I made the mistake of rinsing filter whilst cycling tank so it's been cleaned once, but I was told not to rinse filter until tank is running for a while.
Just don't know how long I need to wait.
The tank is cycled now I think cos I was told you can tell if amm. and nitrites stay 0 for 10 days and you only use water conditioner then it's complete and it's nearly been that now.
Also I've been reading about cardinals and it says they like PH about 6 how do you lower the PH if it get 2 high?
Things looking good so far thanks to all the help from this site :yourock:
Think I'll just do it next water change hope it's ok. guess it's just a case of when you think it's ok?
Usually the filters have more than one pad in them. 2 or 3 is common. The way I do it is I rinse out one pad at a time,so one week I'll rinse out one and leave the other dirty, and then the next week I'll do the other pad and so on. This way not all of the bacteria in the filter is killed off at once.
Also, rinse the filter pad out in tank water, not under the tap,as this will allow for more of the bacteria to survive in the one you're rinsing.
thanks Falina, there r 3 pads so I'll clean one every water change (that's weekly) and just alternate. :)
The same goes for the rest of the filter parts. If you ever feel the need to clean it (which I would avoid, cuz the gunk that builds up is generally good), only clean one little part at a time. That way you aren't wiping out any substantive portion of the bio bed.
