I found a very nice piece of driftwood and petco and since it didnt have a tag on it, I managed to get it for about 7$. Where can I buy more driftwood or some other type of rock safe for zebra loaches?
It has to be something java moss can anchor to and relatively inexpensive.
The only rocks I'd keep with loaches are slates or the round ones with no sharp edges provided these rocks are also inert. Try the Craiglist or eBay for driftwoods.
Craigslist is a great idea, I read about testing rocks, the only downside is that I would have to spend money on them then most likely be stuck with them. I checked ebay and they had a lot of Malaysian driftwood. What is that exactly and is it safe for FW tanks?
Where do you suggest I get slate rocks?
Any driftwood sold for aquarium use is going to be fine for your aquarium. Just to be safe, give it a boil or two before you put it in your tank. Also, some driftwood isn't waterlogged when you buy it, so you'll have to do that yourself. Just weigh it down with a rock underwater until it sinks on its own. Some driftwood has a pretty high tannic acid content and can stain your water yellowish color and lower your pH some. Usually this isn't drastic and some people go for this effect purposefully. If you don't like it, activated carbon and water changes will get your water back to normal. The boiling process and soaking to get it waterlogged often removes a lot of these tannic acids before the wood even makes it to your aquarium.
Here's a good article on rocks:
My only warning is that the article says go ahead and boil rocks if you want. However, like the sticky on this site says, definitely DON'T boil your rocks, as they could explode and kill you in a very messy fashion. Instead, I just boil a big pot of water, put all my rocks in a bathroom sink, and pour the hot water slowly over them to kill off any nasty stuff.
Ill be stuck with buying from ebay it looks like, thanks for the link to that article, it was a very good read.
I generally favor Aquabid.com over Ebay. It's just the fishy version of Ebay, but a lot of very reputable small time sellers who don't sell enough to bother with ebay are on there.
