I'm looking to set up a 55Gal. Saltwater tank. I plan to do fish only at first, but I would like to do hearty coral after a while and live rock. Where the tank is now, when you walk in the front door, you look into the front of the tank and when you sit in the living room, the tank is right in back of you. I would like to add a skimmer, but do not what that hanging off the back of the tank. Right now I plan on running a Rena XP2 canister filter and was thinking of getting a skilter power filter, but after looking on the web, I'm a little skeptic. I really do not what to put the money into a sump. Does anybody now of other options I can take?

Skilters are crap. Prizms are crap. The highest quality and best skimmers need a sump. Check into AquaC for a HOT skimmer but get the optional overflow box as it is a necessity. Coral life is coming out with some HOT skimmers with needlewheels. Don't get them with the rio pump, I think you'd have to get the 220. If you can get an overflow box for it, do so. A skimmer pulling water from deep in the tank is not skimming.

I don't off the top of my head but I have a connection with the ER VP if you'd like more info. Deltec also just came out with a HOT that is spposed to be great, but don't expect them to be cheap.
