What's in those bags that came with my filter?
Hi guys, I'm helping my little sister set up her new 50 gallon tank which we just got today for her little blood parrot and flowerhorn parrot. The tank has a built in filter with which came two bags, one of which is carbon and the other is still unknown to me.
Can anyone please tell me what these white things are and where should I put the carbon and the white things and in what quantities? Should I put them above the filter's cotton?
Thanks a lot!
The other is ceramic rings. Keep the carbon in your cabinet. Not needed unless you want meds, tannins and other chemicals removed out of your tank.
Could you tell us the exact brand so we can tell you where to put the things? I agree, no need for carbon, replace that with filter floss or some other filter media.
Yeah sure, the brand of the fish tank is AIM, it's AIM 850. A clerk at the pet shop told me to put the ceramic rings above one of the sponges in the filter and the carbon above the other one one. It's one of those filter that take the water from one corner of the tank then throws it out on the other corner. Should I remove the carbon, guys? Thanks for the info :)
In regards to carbon topic:
Is it unnecessary? I'm setting up a new tank (total newbie) and the Magnum filter I have has an area around the filter portion to put carbon in.
(tank also has a built in wet/dry)
Should I run the Magnum w/o the charcoal??
Activated carbon "runs out" after a while. I save mine for when I need to medicate the tank because after you're done medicating, the carbon can be added to the filter to remove the medication from the water. Some people also believe that activated carbon removes helpful chemicals from your water that could benefit the fish, and some people also believe that activated carbon causes or contributes to hole-in-the-head disease. It's still a topic of debate, but since it's definitely true that the carbon becomes useless after being in the filter for a few weeks, I choose to just leave it out and replace it with something else, like filter floss.
I think I'll read up some stuff on filter floss to see what are its functions and I'll probably replace my carbon with some of it.
okay I just realized that "filter floss" is the "technical" term you used to refer to the cotton-like stuffing of the filter :P
Yup! Just mechanical filtration. If you've already got that, I'd add more biological filtration instead (like the clay rings, although there are many different types)
kymmie, there's no need to run charcoal in the filter. I've got a magnum 350 and I replaced the charcoal in the basket with Ehiem Substrat (clay balls for biological filtration)
