Question about cycling with prawn.

When should I take out the dead prawns?

Should I take them out when I start getting a nitrate reading then do a water change for the remaining ammonia/nitrites or do I take them out and let the nitrates consume the rest of the ammonia/nitrite?

You should keep them in there, you'll need a continuous ammonia source until you decide to add fish (which is also an ammonia source).

Ok, so if the prawns stay in there as a constant ammonia source, when can I add fish?

Im assuming its when my nitrites read 0 and my nitrates have a reading?

You can add fish shortly after the ammonia and nitrites both start staying at 0 with an increasing nitrate level. At that point, remove the prawn, do a large water change to get the nitrates down to less than 20 ppm and bring home some fish. Don't forget the dechlorinator on this water change or you pretty much get to start all over again.

OK cool, thanks.

Another question, I just added in a couple of 18" long bubblers and i decided to put the fish inside of the net I have(medium sized) and twist tie it shut. Will this work or would I be better off with a filter bag?

I am not sure what you hope to accomplish with the bag. When the fish are ready to go in the tank, I put them in. Until the tank is ready, I don't get the fish.

Oops haha, that made me laugh. I meant the prawn, I dont have the fish yet.

I put the prawn in the net to keep a mess from being made and I was wondering if a filter bag would be better or if the net will do just as well.

Keep the prawn in one place with whatever works. The only thing it needs is enough water circulation through the bag to keep feeding the bacteria.

Ok because I left them right in front of the end of my HOB filter.
