Eheim HOB Filters

Anyone ever used one of these? I want to add another HOB to my 29g and Petsmart was carrying the 20g model for $8.99. I've read good things about their canister filters but have never even heard of their HOB filters. Thoughts?

Huh, never saw that one before. Googled it, some people said it does a decent job but gets clogged a bit easier than others. Don't know how customizable the media area is.

A lot of the reviews I read seemed to say it was better than most HOB's, but was more expensive than comparable models by Marineland or Aquaclear. If that's the only fault, then I certainly won't think twice about buying one. I already have another HOB on the tank so I just wanted the extra filtration and flow. The other filter can handle additional media if the Eheim slacks in that department.

I'd say it has a good enough name that for $10 it will be a decent filter, or at least worth a try.

Petsmart had a single filter left, so I snagged it.

It has two cartriges. One has a foam type material for biological filtration. The other came as a plastic frame with a pleated sponge material bonded with activated carbon. I cut out the carbon sponge and put it in a baggie for later, put the frame in a filter media bag, and stuffed in some filter floss. The flow is fairly low with that floss, but the tank already had a penguin filter so this is just an extra. The filter is super quiet. It has an adjustable flow that works well. My only complaint is that the intake tube is pretty short, so you'd have to extend it if you wanted your intake coming from closer to the substrate.

So far, so good. If your local Petsmart carries them and they're as cheap as the one I bought, I'd snag them while they're still available.
