Are we having babies??
Hello. We started our fish tank (30 Gal Hex) about a month ago and my daughter picked out some fish including (what we thought was) a pregnant Sunset Coral Dwarf Platy. Well...she's been growing for a month to the point where she looks like she's about to explode :D We're hoping she's OK. Can you tell by the picture if she is just about to have babies or if she has some problem? I am only concerned because it seems like it's been longer than the mentioned 28 days for their cycle. She is acting completely healthy and her rear has been more white for over a week. :omg:
Thank you, BabyFry

--can't add a jpg, but I can add a video??? I'll try to post the pic after I save this post.

i'm more familiar with guppies but i think she would be more square towards the back if she were about to pop.

Oh dear :( that doesn't look like she's pregnant, but rather sick. See how her scales are sticking out? That's called "pineconing" which certainly wouldn't happen in a normal pregnancy, it's almost always a sign of dropsy, although I'm not totally sure in this case. I'd recommend checking out the link below and posting for help in the emergencies and diseases section.

It actually doesnt seem like dropsy for me, but moreso swelling, which is the sympton of dropsy that causes the scales to stick out.

I think shes having some problems with her pregnancy. (based on the swelling)

Have you seen her pass any fish poo?

Thanks for the responses. She does poop :-) She also eats like she's starving and is very active and seems completely healthy otherwise. I was thinkging the scales were sticking out because she has expanded so much! Any other opinions or suggestions? The pH is 7.2 and the amonnia is 0. Temperature is 80 and steady. I change 25% of the water weekly and don't overfeed.

Hmmmm, I'd say maybe she doesn't feel comfortable having them around the other fish but if you say she's acting normal....

Maybe take her for a ride in the car??? :jk:

Thanks for your help. She died a couple days after this post. It is odd that she didn't exhibit any signs in her behaviour that she was sick.
