Bubble Coral doing something strange?????
I was wondering if anyone knows what my bubble corral may have been doing?? I bought it a couple days ago and added it to my tank, its been doing fine, but tonight I noticed it was opened up in the center,(a thin slit) and some stringy lookin brown stuff was comin out of the split in the center. Then I looked a little while later and the stringy stuff had released form the center and landed on the sand?? Any ideas of what it was doing, hopefully not dying or something????????????
Thanks so much for any help
i think that is the way how they reproduce and release reproductive chemicals ? not sure though i just watched it on discovery channel i may have the wrong impression though
Can you post some pics of it?
Do u have chillers?
Do u have powerheads directly to the Coral?
Do u have T5 or metal halide, or just normal bulb?
What is your water param? salinity, PH, KH, NO2, Ammonia?
Normally Coral died if they are not healthy.
Im not sure exactly what my water parameters are, but i know everything is normal cause my lfs just checked my nitrites, nitrates,ph, ect...Not sure what kind of lightening i have either, There are 2 sets of bulbs, each set consists of one long white bulb and one long blue bulb. I do not have any power heads or anything just a biowheel and carbon filter. My tank is small, 28g. the coral is opened up so i dont think its dying but i still has the split in the middle.
Do you have a skimmer?
what is your water temperature & salinity level?
You need a powerhead to keep coral, check for more info the use of powerheads (Hydor, SEIO and other major brands)
What is the voltage of that light bulb. Is it recommended bulb for saltwater aquarium, try buy Nirox sun bright & moon bright, JBL, Acadia, or any other major brand suitable for coral. Without proper lighting ur coral won't survive for long perhaps another 1 wk or 2.
How large is your tank? Something like a Tunze Wavebox may do some good if its a large tank.
my tank is a 28g, no i dont have a skimmer cause ive never had high nitrite, nitrate or ammonia levels, i do frequent water changes so ive never had any problems. The light is made for saltwater tanks and corals. I got it from my lfs, but i bought it used, the owner of the store rebuilt it and sold it to me, so i dont know what it is, but it was a very expensive light, but i got it cheaper since he had to replace the ballast in the light. My temp stays about 76-78 degrees f. My biowheel provides pretty good water flow, and circulation so ive never needed a biowheel. Im postin pics so u can see the small slit in the center, the brown stringy stuff is gone. I dont know much bout corrals and didnt know if maybe it was feeding or what. I think its a 50/50 light, with actnic lighting or something. Blue and white bulbs.
Your Biowheel is going to become a 'trate facotry, and is terrible for SW and reef use. The anemone may be suffering from that. That should be removed, as well as a powerhead or two added.
Also, you cannot just rely on LFS testing your water. You need to get a test kit, because all the LFS wants is money. 90% of the time, they will say "everything is ok." You need to know exactly what you have, and you will only know this if you buy yourself a liquid test kit.
And, not knowing what type of light fixture you have (PC, T5HO, MH) can be hard. From the bulbs, I want to say it is either PC or T5HO. We also need to know how many watts it is, so try asking the man what it is/was.
I have my own test kit. I test ever so often just to make sure that everything is ok. My Ph is usually about 8.4, Nitrites at 0 ppm, Nitrates at 10-20 ppm. Temp about 76 degrees f. I dont know if my coral is suffering or if this is just something that they do because i dont know much about coral behavior??? I am trying to upload a pic, but everytime i try it nothing appears in the window where the pic should be.
