other uses for a cracked tank???
Is it landfill material or does it have a future life as something other than as a waterholding fish keeper?
Dear son stepped into the 10 gal. that was out on the patio. It was filled with water while I was checking it for leaks. My latest find from the thrift store. grrr... Now it has a crack along the bottom. I'd hate to pitch it if it has usefullness (maybe not to me but on Freecycle or Craig's List).
If it were me, I'd seal up the crack and fill it with water and leave it outside for a few days to see if it leaks. I think a crack along the bottom might actually be less to worry about than if the side was cracked.
If it doesn't hold water, it could still be a suitable habitat for a dry-land critter, like a hamster or lizard. I've kept both in 10g tanks before.
Trying to seal up a crack in the middle of the bottom would probably be asking for disaster, at least later on down the road. Maybe someone could just use it as a hamster or lizard cage?
Thanks! I think I'll try to seal the bottom and see what happens. I don't know where my brain was, but using it for a hampster cage is perfect. Kiddo has been asking for a small pet, not a wet pet, so if I can seal the bottom, then I don't have to worry about little bits of pee leaking out. Yes, I worry about these things. LOL
And if the seal holds, then maybe I can use it for something that needs land and water, so that way there wouldn't be too much pressure on the fix.
Hmm...possibilities. I like possibilities.
You may even be able to refit the bottom with a whole new piece of glass or plexiglass. It's worth a try. Good luck. :)
