Today I found some black light bulbs that would fit in my flourescent fixture on one of my tanks. I thought it might look cool. Has anyone ever used one of these? Will it harm my fish? Would it have a spectrum closer to daylight bulbs or some sort of moon lighting? Or is it something just altogether different that I should avoid?
I'm going to say no
Black light (also Wood's light) is the common name for a lamp emitting electromagnetic radiation
RADIATION????????????? PLUS, if it was okay, I'm pretty sure someone would have posted a picture of it already.
You realize that all parts of the spectrum, including visible light, are electromagnetic radiation, right? I did a little more research on black lights, and found that they have a very sharp peak at about 370 nm, in the UVA range. UVA is not the UV that causes eye damage or skin problems. I assume that this won't be very helpful for plants, but does anyone know if it'll bother my fish? I read that a lot of insect, tarantula and scorpion keepers use black lights to highlight their pets with no problems.
I guess if fish were meant to live under a black light then everything would be glowing, eh? May as well stick with what you know.
