i see them at my LFS and they seem neat but idk i guess i would want some but i have no idea about them at all. :?: what do u feed them if at all things like that. can anyone kind give me the freshwater clam 101 including tank requriments things like that? thanks :D :D :D
I want one too, but it wont work for my tank, and i think they eat nutrients out of the water.
Filter feeders, they will eat baby brine shrimp, Decapsulated BS eggs, small crushed flake, and pretty much anything small enough for them to syphon out of the water. Green water is also a good thing for them.
I have heard they need a soft silty bottom so they can bury themselves but also heard it real doesn't matter because they will bury themselves in any type of substrate, even gravel.
The only ones I have looked into need to have a pH at or above neutral and need some hardness to the water for proper shell growth.
I have a contact for anyone wanting some.
do they move or anything or do they bury themselfs and just put out like a small tube and eat?
They can put out a wedge-shaped foot and pull themselves to a local where the current and food supply suits them. They also use that foot to anchor them in the substrate.
They eat freshwater zooplankton and algae cells. Number one cause of death in the tank is starvation; they need to filter out a lot of food to survive.
Depending on the size and chemistry of the tank, a team of them can clear a tank of green water and prosper at the job.
Won't they eat anyting they filter? They will eat BBS if they syphon them in won't they?
How do you ensure there is? Should you take a few flakes during feeding and mash them up in your fingers very fine like snd then put it in the water for them to ensure they eat?
I too have been looking at getting one for my 10g community tank. No one locally sells them by me, so I'd have to order online form liveaquaria.com. Any additional info would be great.
One thing for sure, if they die, you need to get them out of the tank. They seem to start decaying before they are dead,. Just kidding there. But they can foul a tank in a hurry.
