bamboo, is it safe in my tank?

My Mother has bought a feng shui bamboo plant to bring our house good luck. She has asked me to put it in my cold water tank. Is it safe for my fish?

Hi Richard.

Don't use it. It will rot and thereby increasing ammonia level which is toxic to the fish.

Blue is right, bamboo is not meant to be completely immersed in water.

If it were dead, and subsequently dried...what would be the process to put it into use?

Keep it exposed under the sunlight for a few days although I did my leaves for almost a week before using them for my tank.:dunno:

Ok, I did find something about this.

If you have the lucky bamboo at such a level that the leaves are out of the water and roots are established then the plant can be grown this way. True bamboo is not aquatic nor emersed and will not grow in an aquarium. For Lucky bamboo, your lighting has to be high enough above the leaves not to burn the leaves or it will die. Nutrient needs are minimul although a lack of needed nutrients will cause it to wither and die.

Don't know if that helps but sounds like a real pain in the neck.
