Alright so here's the story, I am a first time Betta ower and I have had this fish for about a week, his name is oscar and I am absolutally in love with him.
So today I cleaned his bowl for the first time and I wasn't really paying much attention to what I was doing because I was trying to do 30 things all at once, and I think I made his water too hot, because once I finished cleaning his bowl and replaced the water and put in the conditioning treatment I put him in and he immediatally started thrashing around in the water, running into the walls and such, I got scared and once I realized the water was too hot I threw him in some cooler water and cleaned the tank again and replaced it with water with the correct temprature this time.
But for the first few minutes when I took him out he looked pale, like he was turning white instead of his usual light blue. his color soon returned after that and then once he got all situated back in his bowl he became very jumpy, like someone put something down on the table he was on he'd start swimming around very fast and trying to jump out of the tank and such, just seeming very agitated even if anyone touched the bowl. He never flared or anything though.
And now he's just kind of laying at the bottom of the tank, he usually would be near the bottom before all this happened but he's actually looks like he's LAYING on the bottom not floating at the bottom like he usually does. I'm not sure if maybe he got burned because the water was too hot, I would guess that the water was maybe body temprature but not steaming. He responds a little when you tap on his bowl but he doesn't get agitated like earlier.
When I first got him if you talked to him or tapped on the bowl he would move around the bowl now he doesn't really seem like he wants to leave that spot. I'm so worried about him and I just hope he's okay, can anyone tell me if maybe he's in shock or something? or if there's anything I can do to help him???
im sorry to here about his condition
i would say he's a bit shocked from all the moving and cleaning and temp change. you want to try to move around the fish as little as possible in the tank. what is the size of your tank? Does it have a heater?
when doing water changes you should do about 25% of the water every couple days. And yes make sure the temp of the new water is the same as the rest of the tank (this should be around 78degrees- bettas need a heater)
is he eating and pooing alright?
some more great info is in the betta care sticky at the top of the anabantids forum
good luck with your fish.
it's like a cube, pretty much the size of any standard gold fish bowl, he's moving around a little more, but he wouldn't eat when I fed him this morning, the water is about room temprature I would guess because I don't have a heater for him but he's always acted like a normal betta fish with that temprature.
they still need the heater man bettas need 78
Deff. need a heater unless your house temp stays warm, i know my tank stays about 82 witout a heater, but i turn it on at night, temps drop alot during night in tanks, more than you know
yea I've been reading around that they need warmer water, I'm going to pick up a thermometer tomorrow just to make sure that the water is not too cold. it gets pretty hot in my room regaurdless because the air conditioning is never on.
Get a heater. No argument, you need one. Bettas NEED the high temperatue abover 78. Mine is at approximately 80 degrees. Room temperartue means nothing, because we usually keep our house at 68, if not a few degrees more. Insuffiecent for bettas. Temperature can easily drop 10+ degrees during the night which can be deadly. Why skimp out on the most important item needed?
yea, I'll have to pick one up tomorrow after I get paid then. He is doing a lot better now thankfully. :] thanks for the tip about the heater though, because everywhere I've been reading has been saying you do need it, or it doesn't matter so I wasn't sure with what to go on.
Sorry I came off so strong at first; I was just kind of stressing a point. Too much on my part.
A TEMORARY fix until you can purchase a heater ,would be to place the bowl or tank on top of refridgerator. The heat from condenser coils gives up some heat. But i stress the word temporary. He needs heat.
