Sneaky Little Mothers
So I have a 40 breeder set up for my 7 year old. Pink gravel, resin castle and pirate skull, and lots of plants, with a nonsensical melange of community fish from South and Central America, Asia, and Indonesia. I got her 6 Panda Cories, and I was concerned, because one of them never seemed to grow. All the others were growing, but one was always about the same size as when I bought them. Then last week the darn thing Shrank.
The fish that was smaller than the rest of the shoal was all of a sudden much smaller. Puzzling.
So I counted the fish. 1,2,3,4,5,6...7....8. Aha! And just to confirm my suspicions, when I cleaned the filter, I found number 9 - all of 3/16" long. Sneaky little mothers have been spawning on me.
Haven't been able to get a good picture of the fish, but here's a link to the tank: What are little girl fish made of?
Congrats, I have panda cories and they are by far my favorite in the tank. I hope one day they will breed.
Well, I haven't figured out where they've been breeding yet, but there are a couple of possibilities:
Java Moss, Caves, stem plant thickets, pebble (marble) beds, and broad-leafed plants. I'm leaning toward either the cave or the java moss as the likely spawning sites, but that's based on no evidence. The tank has a fair transverse current at the top level. They get algae pellets and a rotating menu of sinking tablets as well as whatever of the flake for the rest of the fish hits the bottom on alternate days, frozen bloodworm, brine, mysis, tubifex, and/or daphnia the rest of the time (2 cubes of two different foods for the whole tank) and occasional live brine or blackworms. I try and keep my fishies fat and happy.
congratulations on the little ones. :)
i wonder how they have survived ?
do you feed liquid fry food ?
That is so cool! I would love to see some little cories in my tank! Congrats!
