Help!! White spots!!
We got a new betta on Monday. I got him into a tank and he was fine last night. This morning we wake up and he has white areas on his back, near his nose and next to one of his gills. The one next to his gills when he breathes you can see it move like it's something attached to him that will flake off.
What can this be?
I know you need water parameters but my test kit is in my college dorm and I'm in the process of moving to an apartment so I don't have those right now.
I took him out of the tank he was in this morning and put him in clean water in a smaller bowl to watch him better.
Help me please!!!
Are the white spots tiny, like someone sprinkled salt on him? If so, that's ich. It wouldn't be uncommon for a new fish to have ich coming from the store.
Do you have a heater for the tank? If so, turn up the heat to around 84*. This is usually the best cure for ich and is often used in conjunction with salt, but bettas don't like salt in their water at all.
No I don't think it's ick. I looked at some photos of it and his is more spread out, it's not like salt.
It kinda looks like it's flaking off of him, kind of like my frogs when they're shedding their skin...could it be a fungus??
Have you gone through the diseases sticky yet, there's a bunch that have pictures on there and it might be helpful. We really can't tell you a whole lot without seeing it.
Yeah, I did. I decided it was a fungus and right after work I bolted to Wal-Mart to get some fungus treatment, and the fish was alive when my boyfriend left the apartment at 8 and I came in and rushed into the kitchen and he was dead.
It's the first betta we've lost.
Sorry for your loss. The first few days is always tricky for fish, especially one that's kept in such bad conditions at the store. The shock of the move probably brought out a latent disease. Are you going to get another one?
We might get another one. We have four already with no problems really, this was the fifth, he was just so pretty, clear fins when he flared, had never seen anything like him. So we added him to the family.
