What sorts of music are people into?
Always fun to talk about music in off-topic forums...it's a great way to learn about new artists. I mostly listen to indie rock (though not your "typical" indie for the most part). I'll snag the list of favorite artists off of my Facebook...
Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Pavement, Built to Spill, The Beatles, Pelican, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Sigur Ros, Slint, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Local H, Pixies, Velvet Underground, Wilco, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tool, Helmet, The Beach Boys, Flaming Lips, Hum, Led Zeppelin, Low, Pink Floyd, Mudhoney, My Bloody Valentine, Neutral Milk Hotel, Primus, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Mono, A Silver Mt. Zion, Red Sparowes, Brian Eno, Mastodon, Rodan, June of '44, Polvo, Chavez, Kyuss, Melvins, These Arms Are Snakes, Isis, Sleep, High On Fire, Aereogramme, Neurosis, Dizzee Rascal, Electric Wizard, Russian Circles
Some of those artists should be recognizable by just about anyone...I'd love to talk your ear off about any of the others, if anyone's interested. So what're you guys into?
i am a huge led zeppelin fan and can answer just about any question about them other then that almost any 70s rock group sounds good for me. a really good indie band with a 70s sound that came out about 2 years ago with a new album coming out next week is a band called
Rose Hill Drive
i would recommend checking them out
Read up on Rose Hill Drive on allmusic - they sound cool. If you're into 70's sounding blues/psychedelia influenced hard rock/metal, I definitely would recommend checking out the newer stoner/doom stuff. Kyuss were the band Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri were in before Queens of the Stone Age, and they play heavy, downtuned stuff that comes straight out of Sabbath/Zeppelin/Deep Purple with just a heavier guitar sound. Sleep are considered stoner/doom and are usualy slower than Kyuss and with slightly cheesier 70's sounding (think Hawkwind maybe) vocals. Electric Wizard take it all to an extreme, still rooting their sound in blues but making it just impossibly heavy. Great stuff.
Wow...I was just watching some Rose Hill Drive videos on Youtube...those guys are pretty good. But the best of it all was their cover of Helter Skelter...this is definitely the best cover of that song I've ever heard.
far easer for me to say what I don't like.
so I don't 'do' rap, house, hip hop or deathmetal.
other than that, I'll listen to anything
if I had to pick a fav genre then it would have to be Ska/reggae
I agree with you about most rap and hiphop, but that's probably because those genres have become watered-down and terrible just like radio pop and country have. I don't listen to rap in general, but there are a few innovative artists I enjoy, like A Tribe Called Quest, who used mostly traditional jazz instrumentation as the backdrop for their mellow rhymes. I also like Dizzee Rascal, a British rapper who has ridiculous Aphex Twin-esque breakbeats and noise blasts.
Death metal is a pretty specific sub-genre of metal, and I don't really like it either. I can't deal with those vocals. There are lots of other subgenres I like more, like thrash and stoner/doom metal.
I can't really get into reggae, but I certainly did enjoy the third wave ska revival about a decade ago. I was really into ska/punk bands like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake.
batman! it has been so long since i have come across anyone else listing the pixies in their music! how refreshing.
I got to see them on their reunion tour. It also happened to be the night that Surfer Rosa went gold. Awesome show. I'm still holding out for a new album, although I probably shouldn't.
I WAS THERE!
That is so funny. haha
Who did they play with that night? Bloc Party or The Rapture?
I saw the Cure at the same place, and I always get confused when I try to remember who opened for who.
It was Bloc Party. I'm not really a big fan and I showed up about halfway through their set. Oh well, great show anyway.
