Filter advice for a 55-gallon

I'm going to set up my 55-gallon tank again. I used to have a Bio-wheel 350 running on it, but since that is now on my 29-gallon, I need another filter.

I have to have a HOB filter rather than an external one since the HOBs are cheaper and since I don't have a cabinet to hold an external filter.

I've seen a Tetra 500 and an Emperor 400. I really like Marineland products better than Tetra products, but would it be worth the extra filtration to get the Tetra filter? (I prefer to go overboard with the filtration.) Has anyone used either of these products?

If it was me I would go with the Emprorer. Simply because it has 2 biowheels which adds redundancy. It also has 2 chambers which does the same thing. This way if one side gets clogged or one biowheel stops working over night you have a built in backup.

That's what I was thinking, too, but just wanted another's input before making a final decision. Thanks! Plus, I just found out I can order the Emperor for a LOT less than the Tetra... :)

On a 55 or larger I might even go as far as adding a second filter, Maybe an AC30-50 and fill it with Biological media with a sponge pre filter. Inexpensive way to add tons of biomedia.

I love Marineland filters, I'd totally recommend going with them. Also, you can't beat multiple filtration so +1 for that idea as well!

If you are looking for a deal, you should check out your local craigslist. I see nice aquarium filters for sale all the time on there.

I recommend a canister filter and a medium sized HOB. I run a Rena XP3 and an Aqua Clear 70 on my 55, plus when my QT tank is empty I add the AC 20 to keep it seeded. They do a great job.
