Ickle fish needs your help!!
I have a community tank with around 12 or so fish. I forget specifics, suffice to say everything has been great for 18 months. Except now my male Golden Gourami seems to be worse for wear. He is somewhat reserved and hides at the bottom or in the house feature, he eats less and doenst engage with anything. Initially he had red sores/scratches and grey/pinky fins. I thought he must have damaged himself flying about the tank (recently he had a spell of seemingly being startled and flying back and forth - this seems to have passed and maybe completlye unconnected). But as time has gone on, this is c2weeks on, his sores have got larger and redder and his fins pinker and a little weathered.
I have tried one portion of an offshelf fin rot remedy. But admitedly I (maybe foolishly) changed the water 2/3 days later in attempt to tick all the boxes for impriving conditions. I clean water weekly as it is.
I have attached a few pics and hopefully you can best advise where to go next. My instinct says I should do another treatment (lasts a whole 7 days) and see where we get to. Just want to double check this is right before potentially wasting another week of the little fellas life!
Be warned, I am a novice at all things fish. So when you replying imagine speaking to the village idiot.
A little more information would help too:
Do you have a liquid test kit for testing your tanks Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate?
What kinds of fish and how many are you keeping in the tank?
How big is the tank?
What is the temperature and pH?
What kind of filtration are you using?
How much water do you change weekly?
What medication did you use?
Ouch! I'd go through the Diseases sticky and see if any match up.
>Juwel Rio 125 with added air pump
>Water tested with test strips and scores well on all readings. No issues.
>Water changes weekly 20-25%
>Plant life bright and in good condition
Fish in aquarium:
2 Golden Nugget Plecs
2 Golden Gouramis
1 Pearl Gourami
2 Angel fish
Looked at disease list and could be a number. Looks most likely fin rot or some bacterial sores. If i was confident enough to go off that I wouldnt have put this post on, so advise would be appreciated.
I have a number of off shelf cures for fin rot, bacterial treatment, fungus etc.
Would u isolate the fish?
Any ideas, should I continue with the offshelf stuff? Only tried one dose of fin rot so far.
89 liters works out to 23 gallons...any intent to get a really big tank soon? You're pretty grossly overstocked with the plecos and three gouramis in one tank (I'm assuming all males) is asking for some serious fighting. Try testing your water with a liquid reagent kit if you can find one. Somehow I don't see even the filter that looks like it goes with the tank being able to handle that load.
The plecs are very small at present and i havent seen any fighting yet in over a year.
Aquarium staff said that my tank is not overstocked.
The water quality is faultless per the testing strips I use.
Any help re the disease?
It looks bacterial to me but I'm no expert.
Your tank is actually going to overstock range. It is expected of most LFS to lie to you assuring you with a false impression that it is finely stocked. If I were you, get a larger tank, preferably a 75g to house everything while separating the gold gouramis from the pearl. Golden gouramis are semi-aggressive and can harass the pearl no end once they settle quite comfortably in your tank.
What exactly are your water parameters? Use API liquid test kit for accurate results. Test strips are predictably inaccurate and unreliable. Throw them to the bin.
What medicines do you currently have? My guess is bacterial infection as well. Isolate the fish first.
Thx guys, will get test kit and isolate fish
keep u posted
