Fish ID, Pic included
Sorry I wasn't sure what section to post this in. These fish were all bought in Thailand so wasn't sure on the exact name
from top to bottom, the Thai description read;
Can anyone clarify these? they always stick together and never show aggression to each other. They are kept with a 10inch spotted gar, which tends to stick to its own area of the 120gallon tank, and never seems to bother his tank mates.
Thanks in advance
Well, the one in the Middle is definitely an African Tigerfish, Hydrocynus vittata, and the African or Kafue Pike is an African Pike, Hepsetus odoe, and the one on the top is a Gar Characin or Rocket Gar, Ctenolucius hujeta.
I'm not a big predatory fish keeper, but I would bet that the Rocket Gar would be OK in a 120, but that the other two would get too big. I know the Tigerfish is a riverine pelaigic species and needs lots and lots of swimming space. African Pikes get 2 1/2' long, (70cm) according to fishbase, so that's probably too big for the 120. Practical fishkeeping says that a 75 is good enough for 1, but that's based on the fact that the fellow who wrote the article has never kept one that got larger than a foot. On the balance, a 120 ought to work.
I'm with tophat. The odoe and hydrocynus vittatus will both outgrow that tank but are both in demand in the predatory market. Dont know much about the other as I have never wanted to keep one.
Thanks you very much for the detailed info, I was planning on upgrading to bigger tank when they get too big.
Iím pretty sure the top fish isn't a Ctenolucius hujeta, I have one of those in another tank at my brothers place. The head is a lot different, actually the head is very similar to the African Pike, also the colouration and scales seem different.
I'm thinking its the angle on the rocket gar that's getting the head bent out of shape a bit, but note the eyespot at the base of the forked tail, and the fairly uniform color otherwise. Also, they do have the sneering mouth, with the slightly bowed upper jaw like with pike livebearers.
