Spin off Using wood in tank
I just read a topic about using wood in tanks and the poster was told to boil and pressure wash. I have some cypress knees that i wanted to used in my 55 gal, but have been to scared to do so. These have been cut, boiled and peeled to reveal the under wood, this was done over 8 years ago. Would it be safe to add them, should I re-boil them, soak them?

If they have not been treated with a glaze, I would be willing to give it a shot. First, put them in a bucket of water and monitor the effect on pH. If you go a few days with no significant pH drop, then give it a go.
Thank you. I am off tp soak one now. It looks like I have only one short enough to fit. I know there is another here somewhere that is shorter, but I can not figure out what I did with it, grrrrrrr
*** I just tossed one into a bucket to soak...and the sucker floats like a life preserver...heres hoping it will sink if it absorbs some water..
I'm also adding some wood I found outside to my tank. I personally didn't think it was necessary to pressure wash it, but I did sand it and give it a quick scrub. Boiling it will help it sink quicker, but it could still take a while. Soak it for a week or two, and boil it for a day if possible, and you should get it to sink.
I boiled it all afternoon, then let it soak over nite in pot (my gumbo pot..hubby is unhappy) It was a lot heavier this morning, but still won't sink, I have it weighted and soaking still. Heres to hoping I get some sinkage soon..

maybe try weighing it down with a brick ?

As for the wood pressure washing and boiling aren't needed. Most of the wood I own is too large to boil so I cleaned off all the loose pieces (sand if you like) and if its small enough use a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water and use a stone to hold it down and just change the water daily for a week and if you leave it in longer you can change the water every few days. Depending on the size and type of the wood it can take weeks to months to sink.
I used some gravel and nylon net to make a sling. I put it over my driftwood, put it in the fishtank and a few weeks later just cut the netting off. It worked well.
