Best Way to Catch Platy Fry in Main Tank?
I want to remove my 4 or 5 platy fry from my main 30G tank into my cycling 5G tank. I have successfully caught two of the slower fry, and they have been in the 5G for over 24 hours. Each fry is about an inch long, give or take. The two or three left are very fast and smart. I cannot catch them the way I caught the other two (net w/ sinking pellets and flakes). I also tried the "water bottle" trick to no avail (caught my female Krib and betta). I do not want to remove 5 pieces of driftwood and live plants to get them out. Thoughts?
i think someone recomended the good idea of two nets,
corner them and you may be good to go.
Wait a while till they've calmed down, then get them when the lights are off and they're sleeping? It seems like the longer I chase my fish, the harder it is to catch them, so it's nice to give it a break.
Might be time to rescape, Cody. Use two nets. Try using a smaller net to drive the fish into a larger net or bowl. You have placed yourself into a tough predicament by not wanting to remove anything. They will have a multitude of hiding places. Also, bring the net up from below the fish.
Oh, and learn to swear heavily. That is also important. You may also end up being a good friend of Jimmy Beam and have a liver the size of a VW.
Thanks both of you. I havent tried getting anyone since last night, and that was a long 35 min and ending with no one. :?
I will try both of your suggestions.
And lol, Herefishy. All right. :) I know all of their hiding spots though, and the fry usually don't go down past the half-way mark.
Well, I caught another baby. That means I have the fastest one left in the tank...argh!
I did the two net thing and it worked. I havent had to take anything out, yet.
woohoo cody well done :) glad you survived.lol
Success! I got the final baby after who knows how long. Everyone is in my 5G tank cycling. In 2-4 weeks, I guess I will try to rehome them.
*this* is why I stopped keeping livebearers. Glad you finally caught them all!
