kribs need a cave?
i'm looking to breed a pair of kribs, i was reading on some other sites that an upside down flower pot or half coconut shell helps promote breeding, i was wondering if that is absolutely nessecary. I would post a picture of my tank, but i dont know how, but its under my tanks on this site. let me know what you think i should do. i feel as if the lava rock has a sufficent cave, but i dont know.
They need a cave. They breed in seclusion, and lay their eggs on the roof of a cave. A female needs the place to feel secure to lay her eggs.
Actually, two would be best so they can choose what they want.
ok cool, ill have to put a couple in then,
One cave is enough.
I took a clay flower pot and covered it with 100% Silicon and then rolled it in some dry substrate sand and let it cure for three days. My pair of convicts love it so your kribs should be happy too and it blends in with the rest of the tank so I am happy!!!
is it nessecary to roll in in silicon is it? cause i just took a half flower pot from my other tank and put it in.
I think what you have in there is fine, I would just change the angle of the pots so the opening is smaller. You want it just big enough for the fish to get in and out. Maybe add some plants so they have some more hiding places and can have their own territories.
No, it's not necessary to apply silicon and roll it in your substrate material. I just like the pot to blend in as much as possible.
A cave suggestion that works great is a reptile cave. They make these caves for reptiles that are magnetic and half goes in the tank, half goes out. My room mate uses it for his Pelvicachromis taeniatus and it works great because he can flip off the side to check if they spawned without disturbing them by lifting up the pot or moving the cave. This also allows you to easily check how the eggs are doing as often as you want.
