Pond snail extraction(any comments?)
I have been taking pond snails from a nearby lake and keeping them in my pond. I haven't taken excessive amounts that would upset the lake's equilibrium though. Its a great experiment if anyone cares to try something like this. I just want input on this to see what people think.
as long as its with in reason i think its fine
Not a good idea if you have ornamental fish in your pond. Live animals from local lakes and streams can bring in many forms of disease and pollution, and yes, that includes snails.
I would not suggest doing something like that to anyone who values the life in their ponds or who does't first quarantine the snails for a minimum of 3 wks in a suitable environment away from every other animal.
Also, keep in mind, pond snails are primarily vegetarians, so if you keep any aquatic plants in your pond, those are likely to disappear rather quickly or suffer extensive damage. Plants are also susceptible to infestions by parasites and diseases that can be transfered from a local wild habitat to your pond, and can be difficult to impossible to fix once introduced.
No ornamental fish just some comets. And the plants, no snail has come close to wiping them out(unlimited supply of anacharis). To me they're not as ravenous as people think.
Ravenous is species specific... it would depend on how big they are and what species they are... and how big they're going to get.
BTW, if a fish, including a comet, comes from a lfs, it is considered an ornamental fish. Comets are no exception to that... Tank bred/raised fish don't have the same immune system that a wild fish will have. This is where disease issues come into play... and not all diseases will show up right away. I just wanted to warn against doing that so that others know the facts behind it... overall, it's risky and not a good idea.
Thanks for the info. I guess I can modify(for safety) my experiments:P. I didn't know it could be that harmful.
