Hermit Crab ID, please
I bought a bunch of "scarlet hermit crabs" the other day, and most of them were. However, once is quite different. The legs are red and white striped and the eyes are blue. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/Arthropod...IX/Hermit4.jpg is a pretty close image of it. Right now it's small, the shell it's in is around 1/2".
Any idea what kind of hermit this is or where I can go to find out?
I recognize it but I will have to look through my reference books to find the proper name for it. It gets almost as large as the hairy hermits, not quite as aggressive as the hair hermits but more than the scarlets. It will likely eat the scarlets as it grows, so you might want to consider moving it to another tank or returning it to the store in exchange for another of the true scarlets.
I wouldn't leave them together, it doesn't have to be real big to eat the others.
Once I find the name I'll come back and post it here for you.
Thanks, I went and returned it for a real scarlet. Attractive crab, but I've only got one tank [so far].
That was good thinking, before it got large enough to cause harm. I still haven't found the scientific name for you, although I have looked. Some of my reference books are still packed from our move, and that is likely where the book is that I need.
If I find it at some point, I'll still let you know what it is because that is good information for you to have for future reference.
Best of luck to you and your tank!!
