Propagating snails
Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and have what will probably sound like a strange advice request: I'm looking for a species of snail that will reproduce and reliably propagate itself within the home aquarium environment.

I'm a marine scientist and am trying to find a suitable gastropod that will produce larvae and grow into adults so that I can study the process of shell formation. I used to work with abalone, but you need to intentionally spawn these guys and look after the larvae which can be very labour intensive.

Therefore a species that has one or all of the following traits would be perfect:

1. lays egg capsules or egg ribbons (rather than broadcast spawning)
2. has larvae that do not need to feed (i.e. direct developing or lecithotrophic)
3. larvae are able to grow into adults and reproduce themselves (i.e. have a closed life cycle in the aquarium).

I've read posts on various forums on this topic, and it seems to me that an invasion of snails is often an unwanted thing - this is what I need! Species that might fit the bill are:

various Turbo

Any thoughts or experience anyone has with these or other species and reproducing them would be gratefully received! Also, advise on a company that can supply these species regularly to Germany would be great.
Thanks in advance!
