Red Wag Platy Babies!
Hi, I am new to this fishforum and a beginner to the fish hobby. But a week ago I went and bought 4 Red Wag Platies at a PetSmart and on the way home one of them had fry in the bag. I was able to save 7 of them before the large fish got to them but I have no experience in taking care of fry. The only tank I had to keep them in was a 2 gallon tank beside my 10 gallon tank(which is already full). I know the 2 gallon tank is too small, but I am not sure what size tank I should have to keep them in? And if I add them to the new tank I am worried that it won't be setup correctly and they may not survive. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help. :D

wait are the adult platies in the 10 gallon?

10 gallon tank
Yes the 4 adult platies that I bought are in my 10 gallon tank while the fry is in the 2.5 gallon tank.

I have a 5 gallon tank I plan on getting fixed so that maybe I can transfer the fry in there since they are getting bigger. But to have the tank setup correctly takes at least a month or so and I am worried that if the put the fry in there too early, they may get stressed and die...

Thanks for your help :D

You can cycle with the fry in 5G. I would wait for them to be up to size, though (near 3/4 inch). Just be good with Water changes.

Just remember, you wont be able to keep these fry. Your 10G has enough with the platies already.

My Platy Fry are about 1 month old, and amost an inch each. So you should have the 5G tank up by then, correct? I would tkae the filter you are using in the 2.5G and put the media in the 5G. If you have gravel, add that too.

yeah i would wait til the fry are a bit bigger and then put them in the 5g even if it is cycling. platies are hardy fish (just make sure the fry arent too small) so they should be ok. and like cody said, your 10g is fully stocked already so you will have to give the fry away or return them to the store eventually. how old and how big are the fry now?

My fry are about a 1 cm long. I have had them for about 2 1/2 weeks in the 2.5 gallon tank (I still have 7 of them in that tank). I am in the process of fixing a leak in the 5 gallon tank...anybody have any good links on how to fix that? Thank you so much for all your help!! I really appreciate it! :D
