Cardinal Tetras did I make a mistake?
So I bought 8 Cardinals for my 55 gallon I knew that they were kind of a finicky fish liking very low nitrates. But I didnt realize that they liked very acidic water below like a ph of 6. So I have had them for 3 days know and 2 of them are acting a little retarted I guess I would say. Swimming upside down banging agisnt things ect. I am assuming they are a bit stressed already. My question is, is it my ph being 7.2? Nitrates are 0 as of now same with Ammonia. water is 77.8 F. I called the pet store the ph of the tank the Cardinals are in is like 6.5 and they are tank bred not wild. He told be just to watch them..... Is there anything I can do to help them maybe some salt or copper?
No don't ad copper ore salt.salt is very bad for tetras.
What is the hardness of your water if your water is hard there kidneys will fail.
What other fish are is the tank?
Agree, we need more data on this setup.
While a pH of 7.2 is high for this species, it is not going to cause what you describe this fast, unless they were not acclimated to the water when introduced.
How long have you had this tank? If it isn't properly established yet perhaps you've had unnoticed swings in water chemistry.
How did you acclimate the fish to your water parameters?
PH won't be an issue with this fish.
Salt is in every "freshwater" body of water. IN FACT SALT KILLS OFF DISEASE YOU MORON. Just do not add too much salt because they are still freshwater fish. One half tablespoon per 5 gallons is what I use. Do not use ionized salt, use aquarium salt.
As for salt, this is mistaken. There is no salt in tropical freshwaters. And soft water fish are harmed by any salt. This article explains it:
