questions about these test results
Ok first a little background. I got a 55 gallon long tank from someone. The background on the tank is a bit umm.....blurry. Hubby got it from someoen at work. It came with 6 african cichlids. The people we got the tank from cliam they have had it "awhile" but the cichlids are small IMO like new pet store size 2-3 inches and skinny. So I am thinking these fish are no more thatn a few months since being purchased. Had to remove about 90% of the water to get it moved, kept the bio filters wet in transport. So we got it home and set up. Its been running for 3 days I tested the water this morning and here are the readings.

ammonia- 0 ppm (maybe a wee higher, but not enough to register on the 0.25 level)

nitrIte-0 ppm

nitrAtes-5.0 (if that)

My question is with the nitrAtes being so low do you think I will get a spike in the ammonia and nitrIte levels in the next few days? If so what should I do besides water changes? The filter is a Tetra Whisper 60 I also added an air stone and sponge filter. My test kit is an API master kit. Thanks in advance for the help.

I honestly think you'll be fine, although it probably depends on the bioload of the tank, how is it stocked? Most of my tanks stay under 10ppm of nitrates, some as low as 5, although they are heavily planted. Also, the test kits for nitrates can be kinda tricky. You've gotta shake like crazy. If I don't shake all the bottles and between every test I get closer to 0 and if I shake each bottle for over 1 minute I get a reading much higher.

Boy did I find that out about the shaking when i first got the kit. I was flipping because none of my tanks were showing anything readable and iknew better..but I got all that worked out.

As for stocking there are 6 small(young) cichlids in there and I don't plan on adding soon. I'll post a few pics in the pic forum.
