How dos a Check Valve work?

Well i have an airpump connected to my air stones and stuff btu where does the check valve go? Between the two or what? Do i need antoher tube to connect it onto both tubes? HELP!

Like a a door, it is hinged to open one way. Any flow the other way closes the valve preventing siphoning of the tank.
