Substrate Colour?

Hey i'm going to set up a planted tank and i don't know which substrate to use. should it be white or black?

bf2king 03-24-2008 06:06 PM

black is more calming to the fish

SDubstrate colour is down to personal taste. Some say dark colours are more alming. Others say it doesn't matter.

Personally though, I just don't think white gravel looks good at all.

Same here, I like black mixed with another color.

I have seen tanks with black substrates and thought they looked great...I personally prefer natural substrates with a black background but like Falina said, it boils down to what you like!

I have seldom seen pictures of light substrate in nature. So, for the benefit of the fish darker substrates are preferred.

Another reason for darker substrates is that in the wild, birds of prey swoop down from above. It is harder to see a fish from above with a darker bottom. Darker is just more natural, not neccessarily black. Maybe a mud brown. But that is ugly.

So you're saying my tanks gravel is ugly! :o

Why not go for something like my tank, shown below.

i voted for the black substrate too.
i think white would drive you insane tyring to keep it clean,
i also agree on black substrate being calmer than the brightness
of white.

That doesn't look like mud brown to me mb. Kind of looks like red flint. I use the same gravel in many of my older tanks. EcoComplete and some of the moon gravels andsands weren't around back then. If you wanted black gravel, the only choice you had was painted. YECH!!!

Hehe np.
I was just joking around

I'm getting MTS, Bob!
Any cure for it?
I currently have 3 tanks.

I think I'll end up with 74648!!
