Tips on decreasing gourami bullying?
Hi everyone. I got a problem with my tank. I got four gouramis in my tank, each a different breed, and one of them is constantly harassing another gourami to the point where its afraid to come to the surface just to eat with the dominant gourami. I haven't seen him even try to eat and hes been hiding in a cave all day or swimming near the bottom. I've had this happen before, and that one died from starvation. What can I do? Right now im thinking of returning that bully gourami to the lfs. I've heard of adding more hiding places to reduce aggrassion, but i dont think it would solve the eating problem.
I had more or less the same thing happen. 3 blue gouramis in a tank and one of them eventually starved.
One thing that has to happen is multiple hiding places in the top water- Floating plants or tall driftwood with epiphytes.
One thing you could try that my tank was definitely not set up for is to feed the dominant gourami at one end of the tank, then feed again at the other end, preferably behind an obstacle.
tophat speaks with wisdom here. but also keep in mind is what happened with my dwarf powder blue gouramis.... one was a little TERRORIST so I returned him. once the other pb dwarf was free of his opression HE turned into a little terrorist. he actually got himself beat up so bad from picking on one of my 7" severums that I had to put him down. he couldnt swim because he had no fins left... yet he still picked EVERY fight.
S good floating plant that worked well with my gourami was watersprite. It has a decent spred dow and across the top that will help breaak up line of sight and it looks nice too. I have some in all my tanks now!
If there were an indipensible plant for a gourami tank, this would be it.
Another good one is Hygrophilia difformis - Water Wisteria. Same deal with Nitrates. It's not a floating plant, but it's grown to the surface in every tank I have it in (22" at most), and makes a nice umbrella-like crown. It also needs frequent trimming, and it spreads like mad, even under 1 watt per gallon. (Though it looks leggy when the light is low.)
thats weird all my gourmai's dont have problems with each other
your best bet would be to either return the mean gourami or add watersprites. what kinds of gouramis do you have anyway?
wel the one starving is an opaline, and the aggressive ones a gold gourami. I'm thinking of taking your advice and adding those water sprites in, but i never had any live plants in my tank, so this is gonna be a challenge.
What size tank is it?
Gold gouramis are knows for bullying and get large in size.
As long as you have a good light the water sprite will be fine. It will grow more with co2 injection but it's not needed, mine was doing fine for about a month with just the good lighting but then I set up DIY co2 and it took over my 10G within weeks. But I needed the co2 for other plants that weren't doing so well.
