My first cichlids!

I added my very first cichlids to the tank today. I got a yellow lab and a red zebra. They both seem to be male, and have made themselves at home in the rocky cave and driftwood respectively. My one male rosy barb keeps sidling up to the red zebra and checking him out. So far so good on the aggression and territorial behavior. I'll be keeping an eye on them for a few weeks to make sure there aren't any major turf wars or personality clashes.

And now... names... must think of names.

As soon as my camera and my computer resolve their differences I'll be able to post some pics of the new kids in the tank...

I named my paradise fish after characters from Gilligan's Island (Skipper, Gilligan, Ginger and Mary Ann) I'm thinking about keeping the TV show theme names going. Maybe Bert and Ernie? Bert for the yellow lab and Ernie for the red (orange, really) zebra?

Hehe... I've never named fish before, this is fun!

might want to keep a eye on the red zebra, super agressive fish.i was once told anything orange in the african cichlid family to be mean, maybe a mod could help you out with that one.

dodgeboy:

Yeah, I've read some about their aggression levels too. I'm keeping an eye on them. So far, actually, I'm more worried about how the rosy barbs are picking on the red zebra than the other way around. I think he's still a bit flummoxed from the relocation. I'm hoping that I've chosen tank mates that are sufficiently diverse in color, tank swimming level and territory habits that the aggression will be mitigated.

I'll keep you posted tho!

Red zebras are no more aggressive the any mbuna. The orneriest fish I have have of this group has to be either Chipokees or Auratus.
