Eco Complete

Is it common to get a ammonia spike after adding eco complete?

Amphitrite 03-23-2008 05:43 AM

Hmm.. that's one I haven't heard of before. I recently added a few bags of eco-complete to my tank without any problem.

Were you adding it to a fairly new tank, or were you replacing old substrate? I suppose if your tank was well stocked and you took a lot of old substrate it could happen. Could you give more details?

Yes I had some fish die from a parasite and moved all the fish cleaned tank replaced half of the gravel with eco complete and planted the tank witch it has never had and also added driftwood.

I may be starting a mini cycle in tank not sure!
:D

How exactly did you clean the tank? Did this include the ornaments and filter?

Busgod 03-23-2008 02:34 PM

took everything out of tank fish decorations 50% of water 90% gravel added 80 pounds of eco complete and some plants. cleaned fluval filter in water taken from tank, cleaned hob filter in water taken from tank. cleaned all inside surfaces with tank water added water to fill tank and hob filter. no fish added yet just plants.

just did tests on water 1/2 hr ago: ph-7.5 kh-5 gh-5 co2- 5mg/L ammonia-1.5 ppm
nitrite-0 ppm nitrates-10 ppm

Okay, well your tank will be going through a cycle since much of the beneficial bacteria was removed. However, you do have a nitrate reading, so you're getting there. Are you planning on completing the cycle without fish?
