I bought one of the ATI sponge filters II online for one of my hatcheries and was disappointed when I opened it up to find that it was 8" tall from the base to the top of the filter. This was intended for a 2.5 gallon tank which is barely deeper than 8".
After messing with the parts of the filter, I was able to get the filter to stay together and leave one of the plastic parts off. After cutting the filter pad I was able to reduce the height of the filter in half.
5 minute project to turn a filter that was too big into a working filter. I just wanted to share and help out anyone that is looking for a sponge filter for a very small tank. Applying a airstone is possible and will significantly reduce the amount of noise produced by the unit. The filter retails for $10 and appears to be working well.
