Starting new with fishless cycling...am I doing okay?
I planned on getting an Oscar for my new 55-gallon tank. I put 50 lbs of rinsed pool filter sand in there and minimal decorations, a few rocks I tested with vinegar. I have the heater on 80 and the double bio filter running with old filter pads in it. I also have a few socks at the bottom stuffed with mature gravel from another of my tanks. I have yet to add any ammonia (not even sure how much to add yet), but I have two questions. One is, am I doing anything wrong with the above?...the other question is it a good idea to put my single male betta I have in there for the cycling?...I also have a 7-inch pleco I want to eventually add to the baby Oscar when I eventually get him (I'm aware that some people add plecos and some do not). Would it be okay to put that pleco in there now or a bad idea? What are some other things I can do to help speed the process? (in the vein of the gravel-filled socks, etc.) Thank you everyone for your feedback!
my opinion owuld be if you are seeding with media and substrate from a established system the tank is good to go. i would throw the oscar in there, you might see a slight spike but the tank wont take weeks to cycle like a entriely new setup would. oscars are pretty hardy fish and can be forgiving. make sure you do your homework on him though. not going to get on your case here but once they reach sexual maturity they "can be" very very aggressive not to mention they get about 12in long full grown
Thanks Mitch..Think I'll have the water tested and see how things look. I went ahead and put the Betta in there for now, as I haven't put any ammonia in there yet (could only find cloudy ammonia). I don't plan on putting anything in their except for the Oscar once the tank is read and possibly the Pleco
