Hi, I purchased a few rocks from Big Al's in broward county Fl, a red roundish one, a maroon slate looking rock and another rock that had like a marble look to it, it was almost white with a marble pattern, it looked great. Luckily I haven't put any fish in my 35g because the next thing that happenned would have been a disaster! Within 5 hours, the rock literally fell apart. I had it leaning against the glass and it still had the nice marble look from the outside but when I looked in between the glass and the rock I saw about 3 or 4 chunks of the rock that fell off the rock (at least 1 - 2 inches) sitting on my gravel! There was a pile of smaller chunks and plenty of dust around it. This water was crystal clear earlier today! I was planning on running some water tests to make sure these rocks weren't spiking any numbers. I immediatly removed the rock and grabbed as much of the debris as I can. I plan on removing the crushed coral Iim currently using and replacing with a layer of flourite and sand on top of the flourite (for the live plants). I should return the rock back to Big Al's with a fudge surprise in the bag for selling that garbage.
Welcome to the forum!
I would go easy on the extra present for Big Al's and first ask yourself a few questions. What was the rock listed as? Is Big Al's a fish store? Did you know what the rock was when you bought it or did you do like most people, including myself, and see a pretty rock for your fish tank so you bought it? Did you test the rock before putting it in the tank?
I understand your fustration since I looked far for my rocks that I put in the tank. I was very nervous about breaking the seals of the tank with too much weight or the rock breaking down and killing my fish. You can alway get the water clear again. With crushed coral..what were you planning to put in the tank?
I am really suprised Big Als would sell them to you if they knew it was for an aquarium but each store is probably different with different poeple and levels of experience.
I would actually bet that the rock did throw your tnak off a little but with water changes it should be back soon.
BTW, I think Big als has one of the better return policies in the trade so taking it back tothem and epxlaining what happened might get you your money back or at least the right ricks for your aquarium.
