how to get rid of snails
does anyone know how to get rid of my snails? I have 4 white cloud mountain minnows, 4 neon tetras, 3 blue l-f danios, 4 zebra danios, and 2 dwarf suckermouth catfish in a 20 gallon tank, long. I have live and fake plants and, thanks to the catfish, no algae. I also have, unfortunately, a few snails that have gotten into my plant from a store about 3 months ago. They multiplied and in that time i have killed about 50-70 of them. Please help, they are eating my plants and probably my baby fry!
certain kinds of fish eat snail. maybe add some of those?? certain loaches are supposed to eat them.
I've heard if you put some cucumber slices in tank cover with small plate prop up one edge of plate next morn collect snails from under plate.
Cucumber slice or lettus on a plate in the tank at night. In the morning you will see that all of the snails are on the food...just take it out of the tank and your good. They will munch on the plants but won't hurt the fry. You can also choose to add a fish that will eat them but that will lead to other thoughts/problems. I would stick with the lettus or cucumber trick. Your probably going to end up with more since they hitch a ride on new plants. The eggs are so small, it's hard to find them.
ok, thanks, i cant really put any more fish in the tank, so ill just use some lettuce. Thanks a lot everyone!
Do you have room for another small tank, 3 to 6 gallons? If yes and you want a really cool fish, go for a dwarf puffer! They just adore snails and will eat them as fast or faster as you can fish them out of your tank.
I say a seperate tank because they don't play well with others, other than (usually) ottos and (often) ghost shrimp. Tons of personality. They like lots of plant cover and if you get more than one make it very heavily planted as theyr'e very territorial. But they'll come right to the glass and interact with you; I stick a snail on my finger and he snags it right off. Mine's in a 5 gallon hex tank.
