Is this an altum??

I rec'd 12 of these today from Somethingsphishy; I purchased them as altums, the owner insists that they are but they sure don't look like altums to me. Your input is appreciated -perhaps I can convince Keith (the owner) that the 'altums' he sold me aren't altums

peruvian altums: not true altums, but very similar looking scalares, 99% positive

this little graphic shows how true altums' mouths differ from scalares.

Yea, somethings phishy all right, totally different fish from what is pictured on the site. Not a bad looking angel at all, I've always liked silvers with a bit of rust color to the crown, but it's not an altum.

I agree. To give the benefit of doubt to the dealer, the common name "Peruvian Altum" may be the confusion. This is, as was mentioned earlier, just a variant of the P. scalare species, not P. altum.

I do wish common names would fall into non-use.;-)

You might find more info in our profiles, as both species are included with photos. Knowing the oprigin of the so-called "altums" might help to convince the dealer, since the true altum is wild caught and has a specific range as given in the profile.

Byron.
