Power surge protection
I'm not sure if this is the right category, but there wasn't anywhere else logical to put it, so sorry if it's wrong.
I have an apartment with VERY crappy wiring. The circuit blows daily and we fried our vacuum through some something which I don't really understand. I've got all my tanks on multiple surge protectors, but from what I've read, nothing can really protect against lighting strike. We usually unplug our computers, TV's and anything else valuable during storms, and everything in the house is on surge protectors.
So here's the issue: most of the electric equipment for my tank cannot be unplugged (obviously). So what can I possibly do to protect myself from this? I'd love to hear what anyone else had found to work.
I've seen, I haven't spent the money yet, on a power surge/battery backup unit. It's preety cool and suppost to be better than most power surge strips. If I don't find the link tonight I'll find it tomorrow and post it.
I keep a Silent Air battery operated air pump in the closet for when the power goes out, and I've had to use it once. Its louder than normal air pumps, but is powerful. It would be helpful to have at least one on hand for emergency back up.
Edit: You can also keep it plugged into the socket, with the air stone/tubing in place, and when the power goes out, the pump switches on. I don't do this in my case, though, because my power doesn't go off frequently.
Something like this?
Yup! That's not a bad price..the ones we use at work at about $150 each. That's going to be my next major investment since I loose power a lot in the spring and summer around here.
My surge protectors ran me about $79 each.
It is kind of a redundancy as I have surge protection at my fuse box also. Then, too, I have an emegency generator to power the house in case of a power failure.
Thanks for all the responses guys! I think I kinda made myself unclear though.
I've got plenty of battery powered backup stuff for when the power goes out. My worry is finding something that will protect against a lightening-strike level power surge. Even the strongest ones I could find didn't seem to be strong enough to protect against that. And since my house isn't properly grounded, the likelihood of a surge is pretty high if lightening strikes nearby. Has anyone found an alternative/strong enough surge protector? I can hardly switch to battery power every time there's a lightening storm.
Those big ones aren't rated for lightining strikes?? It doesn't sound right. They should be. The one I have at work on my puter is rated for lightining strikes and my boss can't play around with us loosing out computers in a storm since we're the insurance agents!
Wellll, I have surge protectors on my stuff that insure up to about $75,000 so I just figure it'll be enough protection.
