Damage to Chili Soft Coral
I am a newbie to corals and recently purchased a Chili Soft Coral, about a month ago. They are easy for begginers and unfortunately I had a piece of live rock slide and hit it. The damage is minor but I had read somewhere that if 2 corals fell and hit each other they could die off where they touched. Is that true and could that happen to my coral's damage where the live rock hit it. Could I loose the whole coral if not treated.
Thanks for any help....
While It's unlikely you will see too much damage from the coral being struck by LR, it is possible if there were other corals or hitchhikers on the rock. My recommendation, Since the chili leather is, for lack of a better term, a nocturnal bloomer, Inspect the coral in the early AM hours when the coral would be at it's fullest and polyps would be fully extended. Look for any signs of deterioration or other damage. If the coral looks to be damaged, I would recommend an Iodine based coral dip. Lugol's by Kent Marine would be a good option. The instructions fo lugols calls for 1 gallon of tank water and (i believe) 40 drops of lugols, but I would 1/4 that (1qt and 10 drops) if your only dipping 1 small coral.
Thanks for the reply. I spoke to my LFS, where I purchased to Chili and they said if the damage was not to severe they are preety resilant and would be fine. If I saw that it was more severe than anticipated I could cut off the area effected. I would then have to treat the exposed area anyway.
I like you suggestion more so I am going to try that and see if that helps.
