Don't be mad.(long... but with pictures!)
Ok, I did something kind of stupid. Remember that sick baby severum I put on hold that I posted about? Well my husband had to go to the town on Monday where that lfs is and he went in to check on the sev. The severum looked a lot better, but the other was was gone (assuming dead, he really looked bad). My husband got really upset because the water was murky and there was a bunch of new (sick looking) fish in the aquarium with the severum. He had some angry words with the employees and they got the owner to come out. He gave my husband the severum for free, but I don't think they want us in there any more (fine by me).
So Jeremy called me on his way home to tell me that he had the severum. I didn't know what to do! We don't have a quarantine tank set up yet.
So the severum went into the 75gal with the one rainbowfish.
Do you think it will be ok? From what I read about fin rot, it's not usually contagous if your water is good and the other fish is healthy. I'm pretty sure that the severum has a mild case of it (it was a lot worse when we first saw him). We bought a small bottle of pimafix (that didn't last long) and now we have a large bottle of melafix that I've been treating with everyday. He's got a small white smot on his top fin and a small spot on his tail. The tail spot might be a marking, I don't know.
I've been testing the water everyday and the only time I had a small spike in ammonia (.25) is right after I took out the carbon (did a 25% water change). It's been zeros since then. Is there anything else I should do?
I really wanted to tell you guys about him, but I felt really stupid for breaking down and putting him in the tank. One part of me wanted to send him back to the store, but I couldn't do it.
I already love him. He's very curious and he's not scared of anything! When I stuck the hose thing in the tank to change some water, the rainbow swam off into a corner but the severum came right up to it. He wouldn't get out of the way!
Here's a picture of when we first put him in the tank.
Here he is as of tonight.
Here's a look at his little bit of white.
Nice severum! Just do plenty of water changes, monitor your water parameters regularly and feed it plenty of foods until it recovers. Finrot is not really contagious and your severum must have been affected due to the poor water quality your lfs kept it in.
Ah, I love Severums! I'm sure he will heal up nicely now that he's out of the horrible conditions at the LFS. Just keep the water nice and clean and feed him a good variety of foods and he should do well. Severums have such great personalities. Mine used to eat out of my hand. :D
Thanks. :) He's only a little bit bigger than a quarter right now. I wish I knew if "he" is a boy or girl. I wish I could tell how colorful he'll be too. Oh well, I'll love him anyway.:)
One question... How often should I do the water changes until he's better? The melafix bottle says to treat for 7 days and then do a 25% water change. Is that good or should I do it every couple of days?
Those instructions will work fine. I would personally change 40-50% but that is my preference, a lot of people don't. 25% will be fine if that is what you decide to do just remember to do it every week and don't neglect it for more than a couple days if you have to.
